a meeting about a field
(Thanks to Sara Finley for forwarding all the photos!) Last Friday night between 7 and 9:30pm about 25-30 Mile-Enders (and other assorted Montrealers) got together at the YMCA to talk about the future of the Maguire Meadow (otherwise known as the abandoned field behind the big buildings on De Gaspé). The word on the street is that the City has taken over the field with the understanding that...

ok, one more...
(photo found here.) I just noticed that the Friends of the High Line posted some species lists and other posts of the plants found in the new industrial green park. They posted in two installments, part one and part two are worth a read for those who love flowers and would like to judge for themselves how well the City of New York and the design team have done in creating their little...

this photo made me think of roger latour...
(found this pic here.) I know it is clearly designed to look like a grassland, and there is little to nothing about it that is self-seeding (yet!), but I thought the fact that the city thought a grassland was interesting enough to try and mimick — in the city! — was worth mentioning! I figured too that Montréal’s most renowned urban botantist might find that encouraging. Ok,...

thinking through the beauty of abandoned spaces,...
(moss graffiti by Edina Tokodi (and found on Inhabitat)…can we get some in Mile-End please?!) Well, the Mile-End Citizen Committee is moving forward with its sub-committees, and it currently looks like there will be two of them (although I suspect another one or two will emerge out of these two). One will focus on questions of ensuring that affordable living and working spaces continue...

turning streets into green-spaces.
A while ago I ranted a bit about how I thought we shouldn’t give up on big ideas, such as turning over some of our streets for green spaces. I even had a pretty lengthy back-and-forth with one of Montreal’s green development gurus, who thought I should refrain from ever uttering such nonsense, and instead stick to things that could actually be done…(for the rest go here). ...

The best public space built in this city in...
New York Times Architecture critic Nicolai Ouroussoff has just come down in a big way on the High Line. Basically, he loves it. (Please note, all images in this post are taken from the New York Times, and their slide shows. Their article and slide shows are worth visiting in their entirety, so please do so.) I don’t want to harp on the High Line, but man, it is unique, it is an example...

some more park(ing) photos...
Thanks to Ted Wright for passing along his photos of the park(ing) event we did at the 5th Annual Citizen Summit in Montréal, on June 6 (all the photos in this post are his). We are already thankful for making the effort to get out on the street, since one of the folks we met that day is now getting involved with the Mile-End Citizen Committees. You should check out his blog, if you like design...

park(ing) in montréal.
(posted by markefrank) Well, we did another little park(ing) event this weekend, this time in support of the 5th Annual Citizen Summit organized by the nice (and smart) folks at the Urban Ecology Centre. For those who didn’t hear about the Summit, this is from their website: The 5th Montreal Citizen Summit is a social forum open to all and is based on the concept “The City We Want”....
