c’est l’avenir du champ, people.
La dernière réunion du sous comité relatif au champs s’est tenue lundi 20 autour du Roerich Garden en présence d’une quinzaine de citoyens et de beaucoup plus de moustiques…
Y ont été présentés et discutés plusieurs points de vue et projets que nous aimerions à présent approfondir et synthétiser.
Entre autres intervenants, Annie nous a parlé de sur projet de station de phytoremédiation valorisant les nouvelles techniques et concepts biologiques en matière de décontamination.
Diane nous à fait part de son rêve d’apiculture urbaine implanté sur le site.
Paul nous à mentionné un projet participatif à Toronto.
Emily et Kimberley ont fait un point sur l’évolution de leur projet d’édition et leur (urgent) besoin de matière concernant l’avenir du champ.
Sara à fait référence au espaces verts écologiques et à son désir de voir implantés sur le site des zones humides, Roger à réaffirmé l’aspiration unanime à la création d’un éco-territoire et d’un corridor vert, et Susan à souligné la nécessité de prendre en considération le contexte plus large du site, incluant certain bâtiments avoisinants ainsi que le projet de développement de la future rue de l’Alma. Elle a, part ailleurs, proposé d’envisager une option de développement minimal qui privilégierait une approche limitant les interventions physiques sur le site.
Enfin, Isabelle, de retour de Toronto, nous à présenté un projet de coopérative d’habitations et d’ateliers d’artistes (qu’on a déjà discuté un peu ici) très réussi et dont le modèle de développement pourrait inspirer aussi bien les sous comités travaillant autour des pôles ”culture et habitation” que ceux s’intéressant au développement écologiques du Mile end est.
A l’issue de cette rencontre, deux dates concernant les futures réunions ont été proposées:
Le mercredi 5 Août à 18h30 (lieu à trouver!) pour une première “charrette” collective. Apportez tout ce qui peut nous être utile pour élaborer une proposition concrète.
Les mercredi 9 OU 10 septembre (lieu et horaire à fixer) pour un second round de travail collectif autour d’un document de synthèse.
N’hésitez pas à compléter ces informations en relevant mes erreurs et oublis… Nous déposerons avec Marke tous les documents que vous pourrez nous faire parvenir (texte, photos, dessin, vidéo, etc.) sur ce blog afin que chacun soit en mesure d’en prendre connaissance et de les utiliser.

The last meeting of the group taking up the cause of the Mile-End Meadow (between De Gaspé and Henri-Julien) took place on Monday the 20th of July in the field itself. There were about 15 folks who showed up, and many more mosquitoes.
A whole bunch of ideas and opinions were shared by those present regarding what sorts of projects we think we should be put forward for the future of the meadow.
Annie, for starters, discussed setting up a station that would serve as site that would promote and implement new techniques in terms of decontamination. Annie works in a lab that specializes in this sort of work, and she would like to see the knowledge that alreadys exists be used to clean up the field in the way more sensitive than simply removing and dumping all the soil (and plant-life) that is already there, and just trucking in new soil.
Diane shared her plans to establish an urban bee-hive in the field, and she invited others to join her in her project. She loves bees!
Paul talked about the Downsview project from Toronto (which is a reconversion of a one-time airport into a bunch of different ‘zones’). He sees some interesting areas of convergence between some of the participative approaches used there, and the momentum that is currently developing in Mile-End.
Sara talked about green spaces, and her desire to see some wetlands incorporated into the meadow.
Roger reiterated his idea of large eco-territory and a green corridor that would connect all the CP railway as well as the abandoned spaces in proximity (including our field, and don’t forget (says Roger) that these spaces represent some of the most biodiverse spaces in Montreal).
Susan talked about the need to consider the context surrounding the field, including the buildings in the area, and including the future development of the new road to be created (rue Alma). Susan also suggested that maybe we should proceed with the very minimal amount of interventions possible on the field (because she thinks the space is already a success, over all).
Isabelle talked about another project from Toronto, but this one a cooperative for artists that ensures affordable living and working spaces for artists in a renovated industrial space (we’ve already posted about this space here). She thinks the project could be a good example for Mile-End.
There was much more, of course, but that should do for a little summary.
Two subsequent meetings have been planned:
1. Wednesday, August 5th at 6:30pm (site to be determined) we’ll meet for our first design “charrette” (which means a whole bunch of us will sit down together and try to start the design process for the meadow). Please bring anything you think might help us get closer to a clear finished proposition.
2. The 9th or 10th of September (site and hour yet to be decided) we’ll get together for a second round of group work, in order to move us closer to having our finished documents well on the way to completion.
Please feel free to fill gaps that we’ve missed here, and correct our omissions and mistakes…if you have ideas, designs, examples, anything…please feel free to send them to us and we’ll post them here so everyone has access to them.
