Transforming negative spaces

Wandering Ecologies, Weiss/Manfredi’s design submission for transforming Toronto’s Lower Don Lands has just won the American Architecture Award.
The design is based on much of the elements that we have been pushing for through this blog and through our volunteer efforts to save our biggest green space in the Mile-End.

That is, it is premised on reclaiming under-utilized space in such a way that encourages biodiversity, while at the same time providing for the needs of the city’s residents.
The designers go so far as to suggest that a development project with this sort of sensitivity to nature/human interactions can help to shape Toronto’s identity as an world-renowned city. How bold! ;)
I hate to always get down on poor old Montréal, but the Tremblay administration is no where near this way of thinking. And I am not even sure we have the necessary infrastructure or processes in place that would allow us to create design competitions to solicit such innovative thinking.
Montréal needs to wake up, and let some of its untapped talent and resources loose, to create projects that seem far-fetched but in fact are just around the corner … in other cities.
