imagine (le) mile-end.

re-imaginer notre ville / re-imagine our city

An example of a public space / market

Ok, I have no idea where this could possibly fit in the Mile-End (I don’t think it could). But I really like it, for some reason. So simple, yet obviously carefully designed.

A blurb from ArchDaily:

Located in one of Istanbul’s most populated and diverse neighborhoods, Besiktas is an eclectic area with a village-like atmosphere that is in the process of urban renewal….It is an iconic venue where many locals and visitors buy fresh fish daily. The construction of the old fish market was in very poor shape and needed to be replaced….The concrete shell provides a column-free interior space, optimizing the project’s programmatic needs. The new design injects a contemporary and pragmatic solution, at once preserving the fish market’s history.

I guess for us in Montréal (or in the Plateau anyway) in order for us to implant something so substantial, we’d really have to 1) take back space from an existing building that needs to come down, or 2) take back from the street…like, turn a street into a market…(this market looks like it could fit perfectly in an intersection, no?! … which one?…what about Laurier et St-Laurent! ;)

I think the designers (GAD) really deserve credit for creating something new and contemporary that seems (to me) to fit. An especially difficult task given the density of the site. Look at how close the other boutiques are from this site. Impressively done. Great ambiance.
